Welcome to Information Works

This site is designed to show you how to make information work – in other words, how to make information accomplish its goal. This is done through good document design. Presentation of information is very important. No matter how well-written a brochure or manual or other document is, if the document is not well-designed, its usability, clarity, and ability to grab and hold a reader's attention will suffer. If these points suffer, users may decide your document is not worth reading and the information is therefore useless.

The Information Works site was created in order to:

  • teach you the importance of good document design,
  • teach you principles of good document design,
  • provide annotated examples of good and bad document design, teaching you elements that work and do not work,
  • and provide step-by-step instruction for converting a poorly designed document into a well-designed, more user-friendly document.
